JUDGE: IAN SEXTON

According to a first-hand account, it was a cold day but thankfully not as windy as the Saturday. WELKS can be a bit like that, it either seems to be boiling hot or freezing cold. Norfolks were in after the Pharaoh Hounds which took a bit longer than expected, but eventually Ian Sexton was able to start his first CC appointment in the breed. He had an entry of 22 dogs and 24 bitches, with 11 absentees overall. The result of his judging was the crowning of our first Champion of the year, and a right tussle between the BELLEVILLE and WATERCROFT kennels for all the top spots. Interestingly, the CC and RCC came from the Open class in both sexes.

Cathy Thompson-Morgan’s eighteen month old BELLEVILLE MAJOR KEY “Freddie” (Belleville Slip Stream x Bellville Keynote) continued his recent run of good form; he followed up his BIS at the NTCGB Open Show last weekend with that third all-important CC to gain his title. His first CC was at Wales last August and then his second came at Crufts in March. The RCC went to Ruth Gee’s CH WATERCROFT CALLING TIME “Ronnie” (Ch Strathinver Sea The Stars x Watercroft Top Tipple) who is clearly not living up to his name but carrying on his good form from last year.

These two kennels then swapped places for the top spots in the Bitches. CH WATERCROFT PINK FIZZ, known affectionately as “Fizzbomb”, got the CC meaning she has secured the top spot in four of the five major shows so far this year (Boston, Manchester, Crufts and now WELKS). The only bitch to have beaten her so far was today’s RCC BELLEVILLE IN THE BLACK, (Ch Belleville Seduction out of Ch Allright Black Bess. “Rita” got the CC at National Terrier and was BOS at the NTCGB Open Show last weekend – looks like we might have a good old battle on our hands this year between these two.

The Best Puppy spot went to WATERCROFT TO COIN A PHRASE (Watercroft Gold Coin x Watercroft Pop Corn).

Best Special Beginner went to the bitch, Fiona Macartney’s NORDALSET LITTLE BIT OF SUN FOR IVRIG (Hey Smart Looking At Nordalset x Nordalset Sprinkle of Sun) her second of the year so far, following on from BSB at Manchester in January.
